How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

Here are the steps to make this easy casserole dish inspired by classic philly cheesesteak. It may seem like a lot of steps, but I break it down into simple steps for a no-fail meal.

Note: This casserole was made just using an oven safe skillet. If it is not oven safe, use a large skillet for the stove, then transfer to a 9×13 baking dish for the oven.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F.

  2. Cook the pasta according to the directions, which will be approximately 7-9 minutes. While the pasta is cooking continue with the recipe.

  3. In a large saute pan over medium-high heat – add the ground beef, diced onion, Worcestershire sauce, dried oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, coarse kosher salt, and black pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes when the meat is halfway cooked.

  4. Add the red and green peppers, sliced onion, and mushrooms. Cook for an additional 10 minutes.

  5. Add the minced garlic. Stir for 1 minute or until the garlic is fragrant.

  6. Add 3 slices of provolone cheese, cream cheese, beef broth, and pasta water to the ground beef mixture. Mix for 2-3 minutes or until the sauce is thick.

  7. Taste to see if more salt and pepper is needed.

  8. Add the pasta and mix until combined.

  9. Top the pasta with 6 slices of provolone cheese.

  10. Bake for 15 minutes.

  11. Turn the oven to broil at 500° F. Broil for 5 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

  12. Top the melted cheese with with parsley.

  13. Serve immediately and enjoy.

This is a light pasta dish. If you want a creamy thicker sauce you can add ½ cup of heavy cream in step 6 and decrease the ½ cup of water to a ¼ cup of water.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Swap the protein. Instead of a ground beef casserole, swap for ground turkey or ground chicken. As well, you can use thinly sliced sirloin steak too.
  • Cheese options. Make an extra cheesy casserole and add more in the mixture and/or on top. You can also experiment with different types of cheese combinations such as swiss or mozzarella cheese.
  • Adjust the Seasoning. Adjust the amounts of all the spices to make it your own.
  • Make it Spicy: For an extra kick, add red pepper flakes or diced jalapenos to the mixture; or serve with some hot sauce for topping.
