Ingredients and Notes

Steak – Use 1-inch cuts of steak. Best cuts of steak for air frying are those that are also good for frying or grilling. Options for cut of steak include:

  • Boneless ribeye steak
  • New York strip steak
  • Top sirloin steak
  • Skirt Steak
  • Filet mignon
  • Beef medallions
  • Rump steak

Butter – instead of olive oil, we like to brush our steaks with melted butter prior to cooking. It gives flavor yet also prevents sticking, and helps to get a crispy outside. You can also use garlic butter if you wish.

Montreal Steak Seasoning – Probable the most common and popular steak seasoning, and found in most pantries. Use another steak seasoning if you’d like, or try our Homemade Onion Soup Mix as the seasoning.

Do you have to preheat the air fryer when cooking steaks?
Yes, you should. Then cooking will start immediately once the steaks are put into the air fryer.

Tips for Perfect Steak in the Air Fryer

  • Start with Room Temperature Steak – So that steak cooks evenly, it’s always best practice to cook steak that is at room temperature. This applies to all cooking methods, even air frying.

  • Can you Air Fry Frozen Steak? We do not suggest doing so. If you have frozen steak, make sure to thaw to room temperature before cooking.

  • Preheat the Air Fryer – You should preheat the air fryer when cooking steak, so that the cooking starts immediately when placed inside.

Not doing so will change cooking time, and you might not get that nice sear you want on the outside of the steak.

If there isn’t a preheat setting on your air fryer model, turn on the air fryer (ahead of time) until it reaches the desired temperature.

  • Cooking Time and Doneness – Exact cooking times might vary depending on steak thickness, and type of air fryer. For best results, use a meat thermometer and check the internal temperature for doneness.

  • Allow the Steak to Rest – Always allow your steak to rest for 5 minutes. Cover with foil if you’d like while it’s resting. This allows the juices to settle into the meat, or else they’ll just run out as soon as it’s cut.

  • Try a Marinade! If you want to add some extra flavor to your steak, try marinating it for a few hours before cooking.

How Long to Air Fry Steak?

When it comes to steak cooking times, it always depends on method, machine and the thickness of your steak. Plus, everyone has their own preference of steak doneness.
