What is Turtle Pie?

Turtle pie is a no bake cheesecake-like dessert pie that is inspired from the classic turtle candies. It has a cookie crust, caramel cheesecake filling, and topped with chocolate, caramel and crunchy pecans.

This pie is essentially the traditional chocolates yet in creamy pie form. It’s similar in taste, yet not in looks – you don’t have to shape the pie to resemble a Turtle (unless you’re extra).

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Easy Recipe – This no bake dessert takes little prep time and hardly any effort. Most of the magic happens during chill time, as it does need time to set in the refrigerator.

Ingredients and Notes

As always, the full ingredients and recipe is on the printable recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Cookies – Oreos or store brand chocolate sandwich cookies both work great for this recipe, just like in our Oreo Balls Recipe.
  • Butter – unsalted works best, cheap imperial margarine sticks will also work if necessary. Butter does not need to be cold or softened, it works with the cookie crumbs at all temperatures to make the crust.
  • Cool Whip – store brand works just as well as name brand. You can also make your own by beating heavy whipping cream with a tsp of vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  • Hot fudge – I wouldn’t use chocolate sauce or chocolate syrup in place of the hot fudge, yet you do you.

Recipe Substitutions

  • While all the topping ingredients are those found in Turtles chocolates, there is room to add more or less of each of them: whipped cream, hot fudge, caramel sauce, pecans.
  • Use different nuts like walnuts or macadamia nuts to change the flavor profile of this easy turtle pie recipe.
  • Make individual mini turtle pies by using muffin tins instead of making one large pie. Perfect for portion control, parties, or snacking.
  • Use graham crackers instead of Oreo cookies to make a graham cracker crust for this caramel turtle pie.
  • To make a nut-free option, omit the pecans as a topping, or substitute them with crushed pretzels to still have that crunch.

Tips for Success

  • To prevent the crush from sticking to the pan, spray the pan with a cooking spray before adding the crust.
  • To help press the crust down into the pan, use the bottom of a measuring cup.
  • Use room temperature ingredients for a smooth, lump-free filling for this frozen turtle pie.
  • Chilling the pie properly is a necessary step, so the layers set perfectly.

How to Make Turtle Pie

STEP 1 – Start by greasing your springform pan with cooking grease, then set aside. Add all of the cookies to your food processor and process for about 1 minute, or until they turn into fine crumbs.

STEP 2 – Add the butter to the food processor with the Oreo crumbs – and process again for 30-60 seconds, or until the mixture starts to clump up.

STEP 3 – Pour the crust mixture into your greased springform pan and press into the bottom and halfway up the sides to form the crunchy Oreo crust, place in the freezer while you make the filling.

STEP 4 – Make the filling by placing the softened cream cheese (full-fat cream cheese), sweetened condensed milk, powdered sugar, caramel sauce, and salt in a large mixing bowl and beat for 3-5 minutes with your handheld mixer (electric mixer), on medium speed until smooth.

STEP 5 – Fold in the thawed cool whip to the cream cheese mixture – and then pour into your springform pan, on top of the pie crust. Smooth with a rubber spatula. Place back into the freezer and freeze for 4 hours.

STEP 6 – Place back into the freezer and freeze for 4 hours. Remove from springform pan carefully.

STEP 6 – After the pie is mostly firm, drizzle caramel sauce and chocolate drizzle on top. Then add whipped cream and pecans.

STEP 7 – Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Instead of one large pie, use muffin tins to make individual servings for smaller gatherings and portion control. Don’t forget to spray the tins before pressing in the crust.

What To Serve With Turtle Pie

Turtle pie is great on it’s own, a tasty dessert that goes after any dish. You can also serve it with a scoop of ice cream.

You can even add more whipped cream, sprinkle on some chocolate chips, or drizzle it with our Homemade Nutella Recipe too.

Storage and Freezing

This pie is best stored in the freezer and thawed slightly before enjoying. Slice the whole pie before storing in the freezer.

It can be stored in the fridge, but becomes incredibly soft after 24 hours.
