1. For smelly hands after chopping onions or garlic, rub them on a stainless steel spoon. The steel will absorb the odor.

2. Over-salt a pot of soup? Drop in a peeled potato, it will absorb the excess salt.

3. Not sure if your eggs are fresh? Place them in about four inches of water. Eggs that stay on the bottom are fresh. If only one end tips up, the egg is less fresh and should be used soon. If it floats, it’s past the fresh stage.

4. When boiling eggs, add a pinch of salt to keep the shells from cracking.

5. To keep potatoes from budding in the bag, put an apple in with them.

6. Making soup, sauce, or a casserole that is too fatty or greasy? drop in an ice cube. The ice will attract the fat, which you can then scoop out. Or, sweep a piece of bread over the top of the liquid – the oil will be attracted to the bread!

7. If your milk always goes bad before you can finish it, add a pinch of salt to the carton when you first open it, It’ll stay fresh days longer.

8. When storing empty airtight containers, throw in a pinch of salt to keep them from getting stinky.

9. Cottage cheese will remain fresher for longer, if you store it upside down in the refrigerator.

10. To prevent fat from splattering when frying sausage or bacon, try flouring them lightly.

    1. Same here Julia, I do know people that never seem to finish their milk though, before it goes bad. What’s that like? lol

    2. I put my milk into creamer containers which hold around 1 quart and freeze it. There is only myself in the home and I hate to buy a half gallon of milk which is sometimes only fifty to seventy-five cents cheaper than a gallon.
      And with turning the cottage cheese container upside down…always make sure the lid is on real, real tight…believe me, I can speak from experience.
      Also, turning peanut butter upside down will keep the oils in it better distributed.

  5. These are all really great tips! I didn’t really know salt had so many additional uses to keep stuff fresh. I knew that in mass quantities it worked as a preservative, but I didn’t realize just a pinch would do. Great post thanks for sharing

  7. What makes the difference with the cottage cheese container, how do you know if its upside down or not. I mean what would make the difference besides the writing on the outside. LOL the top could be the bottom and vice versa….

  9. #2 does not work. Cooks Illustrated did a big test on this a few years back. The potato does not absorb the salt. Once you’ve oversalted the soup, it’s pretty much going to stay salty. The only way to possibly salvage it is to try to mask the flavor with something else, like lemon juice, or doubling the recipe to dilute the salt.

    This tip keeps getting passed around as gospel but it does not work.

  12. Eggs can make you sick if eaten raw. This is because of what is on the outside of the shell. The shell is very porous do note that when you do place it in water ( same goes for washing eggs ) the harmful germs can very easily get inside the egg. I would check 1 egg and if all is ok then throw it away and use the others. My mom in law taught micro-biology and told me never to eat an egg that came into contact with water while inside the shell.

  16. to prevent overboiling – put a wooden spoon over top -> doesn’t totally solve the problem in some cases (ie pasta), but it does help

  18. #2 – I wish I had read this when I made Split Pea & Ham Soup…I had thought of adding a potato but only to thicken it up…ugh…the salt container lid fell into the soup along with a lot of salt!!

  23. Ginger also works great to get rid of onion or garlic smells on your hands! I always chop those first and then chop my ginger.

  37. October 14-‘When boiling eggs, add a pinch of salt to keep the eggs from cracking.’- This is a dandy hint. Often, when I boil eggs, I notice some of the white comes out from a crack and ruins the look of a boiled egg. Thanks for this useful tip.

  44. Thanks for these tips! My favourite kitchen tip is to use baking soda when soaking messy pots. Your clean-up will be effortless…no scrubbing!

  45. Actually, potatoes don’t absorb the extra salt. They absorb liquid which has salt in it so they taste salty, too. You have to add a liquid, preferably milk or heavy cream.
