While you could use shredded cooked chicken, my recipe calls for canned chunk chicken.

I had purchased many cans at Costco once, thinking it would come in handy for sandwich lunches. Turns out the kids aren’t a fan.

So I had so many tins of Kirkland canned chicken, and continually staring at them in the pantry was the inspiration for this recipe.

I used two cans for my recipe and it turned out perfect, and saved some time cooking chicken breasts.

Ingredients and Notes

You will need the following ingredients to make buffalo chicken dip with canned chicken. As always, the full ingredient list along with the full recipe is on the printable recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Hot sauce – I use Frank’s RedHot Buffalo
  • Canned Chunk Chicken – I love using Costco canned chicken for my recipe. The cans are the perfect size and usually it’s quite affordable.
  • Cream Cheese – I use regular but you can use a lower fat cream cheese if you wish.
  • Ranch Dressing
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese – Sometimes I use a cheddar and mozzarella cheese blend.

Optional Ingredients

You can add some black pepper, if desired. Also you can garnish with chopped green onion. It’s great for presentation and added flavor, but totally optional.

Tips for Success

I use franks redhot buffalo wing hot sauce, yet you can use your own preferred spicy buffalo sauce brand when making this delicious buffalo chicken dip.

I opted for the mild version of hot sauce, yet make spicy buffalo chicken dip if you wish. If you do like that extra kick and have mild, increase the measurement to a full cup.

You can totally use cooked fresh chicken breasts, rotisserie chicken or shredded chicken breast for this recipe. Yet I love the ease of using canned.

The following recipe is how I make the best buffalo chicken dip recipe using the oven. Make sure to check out our buffalo chicken dip video on how to make, it’s so very simple.

  1. Add drained chicken from cans into a skillet and cook for 2 minutes. Add hot sauce.
  2. Stir in cream cheese until blended, then add in the ranch dressing.
  3. Mix in half the shredded cheese, and cook until blended.
  4. Transfer mixture to an oven-safe dish and sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  5. Bake uncovered at 375 for 10 minutes. The top of the buffalo chicken dip will get nice and bubbly.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy with your favourite food to dip! You can even top with chopped green onion for garnish.

You don’t even need to transfer this to a large bowl, just serve in the small casserole dish that it’s baked in.

What do you serve with Buffalo Chicken Dip?

I love to have a variety of options on hand for happy dippers:

  • Carrot Sticks
  • Celery Sticks
  • Ritz crackers
  • Tortilla Chips

How to Make Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip

Transforming this creamy dip recipe into a slow cooker dip is simple, just like my Slow Cooker Warm Mushroom Dip. Some may love this recipe, for this reason alone.

To make crock pot Buffalo Chicken Dip, follow the recipe below. Yet add the combined mixture to the crock pot, instead of the oven-safe dish.

Then, sprinkle cheese on top as you would when making in the oven, and slow cook for 3-4 hours or until the cheese topping is melted.

Personally, I’d use the slow cooker to make this recipe when entertaining or making it for a potluck.

You can keep the dip warm to hot, and ready to serve at all times. This way it prolongs becoming room temperature.

Are you Looking for a Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe without Cream Cheese?

If you’d like to not use cream cheese for your chicken dip, you can substitute it for 2 tablespoons Mayonnaise, and 1 cup plain Greek yogurt or 1 cup 14% Sour Cream.

Keep in mind if you opt for low-fat varieties in this recipe, to make a healthy buffalo chicken dip -your dip will not be as thick in texture as using full the full fat option.

Store and Leftovers

Place in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for up to 5 days. We love to have leftovers for the next day, it makes the best snack.

You can reheat this right in the baking dish, in a microwave or in the oven. Enjoy as dip the next time around or scoop into a fresh bun to make buffalo chicken sliders.

This Buffalo Chicken Dip is one of the best party snacks, or as we did, enjoy at leisure in an afternoon at home.
