It took me years to make my first loaf of Banana Bread. Truth is, a friend used to make many at a time and always gave me one or two from her supply.

I was always so happy to get one from her so one day she asked why I didn’t just make moist chocolate chip banana bread myself.

At the time, I didn’t ‘do bread’, and this confession made her laugh uncontrollably. She showed me how very simple it was, and it was then that I laughed at myself as well.

It’s such an easy recipe with great flavor!

Since that day many years ago {when she handed me her recipe and stopped being my bread dealer} I regularly make this best chocolate chip banana bread recipe for my family.

Banana Bread is a nice break from the usual cereal that my kids eat before school. Plus, it makes a great afternoon snack too. It’s handy to have on hand.

As well, banana chocolate chip bread is a great use for those overripe bananas that we all have sitting in the freezer.

Pro Tip: Once you have many frozen bananas in that freezer, it’s time to batch bake some loaves. They freeze so well, just like Amish Cinnamon Bread!

Ingredients Required

As you’ll see, this amazing recipe uses simple ingredients to make the best banana bread ever. As always, the full recipe and printable recipe card is at the end of this post.

  • softened butter
  • granulated sugar
  • overripe bananas, mashed bananas
  • baking powder
  • large eggs
  • baking soda
  • cold water – the colder the better
  • all purpose flour
  • milk chocolate chips, or semi-sweet chocolate chips

Note: You will want completely BROWN bananas to make banana bread. The browner the bananas, the sweeter and more moist your banana bread will be. I place my over-ripe bananas in the freezer, so when thawed to make this recipe, the skin is black. YUM.

How to Make This Recipe

The first step is to cream the unsalted butter and white sugar together in a large bowl. If my butter hasn’t softened enough, I use the microwave in small increments so I have melted butter.

Add the mashed banana (mashed super ripe bananas) and the eggs to the mixing bowl, and mix together using a wooden spoon.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and mix thoroughly. Sometimes I add extra chocolate chips for good measure.

Pour into a greased loaf pan (sprayed with cooking spray) using a rubber spatula, and bake at 350F for 1 hour.

It might take a bit less or more depending on your oven. It’s done when an inserted fork comes out clean. For best results, remove the baked bread from the pan and place on a wire rack to cool.

Handy tip!

This is a great recipe for bulk baking. I like to bake many loaves at a time or in a day, and freeze for later use. These are great for school breakfasts or taking for school lunches.

Can you Freeze This Recipe?

Yes, and they freeze so well. I like to wrap the entire loaf twice in aluminum foil. They are good for up to 3 months. If you don’t want to freeze the whole loaf of bread, you can cut the banana bread into slices. Then freeze the individual slices.

Alternatively, you could place batter into muffin tins and make individual banana muffins. Freeze in a ziplock or an airtight container for individual use, or send for school lunches.

When serving, allow the bread to come to room temperature. You can also put slices into the toaster to reheat.
