Cook Rice
- Cook the rice as per directions and set aside.
Make Stir-Fry

Serving Suggestions
While this bowl is a complete meal on its own, you can serve it with some tasty sides if you’re feeding a crowd. Miso soup, vegetable spring rolls, or seaweed salad all pair wonderfully with these bowls.
For drinks, try serving it with green tea, sparkling water with lime, or even a cold Japanese beer if you’re in the mood.
Storage and Meal Prep
This dragon bowl recipe is fantastic for meal prep. Store the components separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
When you’re ready to eat, simply reheat the chicken and rice, then assemble your bowl with fresh vegetables and sauce.
The teriyaki chicken also freezes beautifully. Portion it into freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

This was excellent. I didn’t end up braising the cabbage and apples, but what I did do was made a quick “pickle” and used sugar and vinegar with the cabbage. I left it for about 1 hours and then rinsed it and put it in with the veggies and stir fried them.
For a homemade teriyaki sauce:
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 cup water
1 tsp chili flakes ( I like spicy teriakyi)
1tsp grated garlic
1 tsp grated ginger
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup water
1) boil 1 cup water and all of the ingredients ( except the 1/4 cup water/corn starch)
2) make a corn starch slurry
3) add to the mix and stir vigorously ( it thickens very fast)
4) let cool, I used the entire amount for the stirfry
Absolutely delicious. I made the cabbage recipe a day ahead to save time as it is labor intense . But so worth it. On my list to make again
That’s what I usually do as well. So worth it!
Update – I froze a single portion in a glass Pyrex bowl with a plastic lid and defrosted it in the fridge overnight. Happy to say it was pretty good! The rice ended up a little mushy and changed texture slightly but I still enjoyed it and I will be freezing portions again to make my stay-at-home mom life a little easier.
How well does this recipe freeze if I’m making it ahead for lunches? I’ve made it once before and it was amazing!
I have actually never froze this recipe before but now you have me planning! I would freeze in sections to be assembled later though. Let me know if you try too and I’ll update the post.
Thanks so much for sharing this!!! It’s super close to the browns social house dragon bowl!
I made the braised cabbage the day before and then just did a quick reheat and that works totally fine. Makes for a quicker dinner.
Also I added about 1 cup of coconut milk to 3 cups chicken stock for the rice rather than using 4 cups of water. It was fantastic!! Thank you 🙂
YAY!! I adore this recipe, it’s soooo good!
I made this to a T, and husband loved it. He also loves Brown’s social house dragon bowl. Thanks for the heads up about being labor intensive…..I started early with that in mind. When I calculated the nutritional info for my weight watchers (I’m green level) the individual serving ended up to be 25 points!!!! Put me over my daily limit! must have been the carbs!!!! Still it was a great way to get lots of veggies in. Was certainly cheaper to make at home than what you pay in the restaurant. I think I’ll ask my husband what happened to my tip!!!
Also, do you simmer the cabbage with the lid on or off? 🙂
Do the type of apples matter?
I use whatever I have on hand. 🙂
Thank you! Do you know what size bottle of the Kikkoman’s you used?
I used the thin teriyaki instead of thick sauce ?
Hi there! I can’t wait to try this. I just have a couple questions, the apples and cabagge, do you add the apples with the cabbage to eat all together at the end when layering or is it just for the flavour? Also, is the Greek yogurt plain yogurt?
Thank you!
The braised cabbage {apples and cabbage mixture} is a layer on the plate. It’s essential to the dish – so good! And yes, the yogurt is plain greek. 🙂
How much water in the large pot? Before or after the apples?
for the braised cabbage? Just as the recipe states with amounts in ingredient list: “Add olive oil to a large pot on the stove with apple and onion, and cook on medium heat until onion softens, about 4 minutes.
Add cabbage to the pot and continue to cook while you mix the vinegar, water, and brown sugar in a bowl. Immediately add the bowl ingredients to the pot and bring to a boil. …. “
What do you use for Teriyaki sauce? There’s many different brands which all taste significantly different I find.
I bought the Kikkoman brand. worked out great!
I mad either with the Kikkoman brand it it was not the same. The teriyaki was not sweet at all, only salty. I’m going to try again with homemade sauce to get it more sweet like the restaurant’s. But the yogurt was great!
Love the yogurt sauce! I’ve found a couple VH ones that I’ve been liking (agree with Kikkoman lately, I’ve stopped buying).
This is my FAV dish at Brown’s too!! I LOVE it! Thanks for making a copycat for us to try at home! However, I can’t seem to find the detailed recipe on here and where to print it from.
Hi Colleen,
So sorry for this, we had some technical difficulties. It’s fixed now!! 🙂
I just had the Dragon Bowl at Browns for the first time the other day, definitely my new favourite! Thanks for this awesome recipe, my family loved it?
