Winning the Lunchtime Battle

It’s true that busy parents really appreciate a little help when it comes to packing school lunches. Hey, I need the help too, preparing lunches can get so monotonous if left to their own vices! Which is why I like being apart of the Dempster’s Lunch Box Inspirations program. Not only do I get to share the few tips that I have learned along the way, yet I get to learn new tricks as well. Oh, and some great new recipes to try out too.

So, what have I learned and can share from my experience as a lunchbox packer and as a member of the Mom group at Dempster’s Lunchbox Inspriations?

Well, to tell you the truth, most days I do stick to the tried and true’s. If my daughter loves her ham sandwich – why fight it? Winning the Lunchtime Battle only takes finding that balance between kids’ preferences and your need to add a little variety and a mixt of nutrition. It could be as simple as changing up the breads for that ham sandwich – whole grain one day, cheese buns the next. A ham sandwich it still may be, but adding some spinach leaves or a different kind of cheese makes it a whole new sandwich {to me, at least}. And sure, you may have a sneaky suspicion that the spinach leaves are pulled out before that first bite. But, oh well – we try {and try, and try}, right parents?

My daughter always takes her waterbottle and a milk in her lunch most days, yet one day a week I surprise her with her favorite juice. Or a couple of her favorite cookies. You may pack the ‘same’ sandwich most days than not, but providing different sides is enough to make the entire lunch different: carrots with dip one day, apples and cheese slices the next.

And, a tip I always point out – when making that sandwich, make two at a time. Make enough for 2 days worth of lunches. The same trick is applied to cutting up veggies, cut it all so that you aren’t’ doing it daily. On the off days when you don’t have to make the sandwich, you’ll thank me for the break!

    We definitely think alike! I always try to cut up enough veggies for 3 days. I bake a few dozen muffins(different kinds), wrap in foil and freeze. It’s a big surprise as to what flavour they have when they unwrap it at school.

    Another big help I have found this year is to get my kid’s(with hubby’s help) to make their lunches the night before. It helps with the morning crazies.


    1. Good tip, Deanna. I used to bake and freeze muffins all the time, I need to get back into that!
      And, I always make it the night before too, I need to sit and enjoy my morning coffee, and not rush around gulping it! lol

  2. I do the same thing with fresh fruit! Buy an entire pineapple, chop it up and there are our sweet snacks for the rest of the week. The only way I get through lunches…make them the night before!

  3. I like to make lunches the night before so that I’m not rushing around in the morning to figure out what to make. If I make muffins for lunches, I make them on Sunday and they last until Friday.

  4. We always made most of the lunches at night because it’s just too hectic in the morning with 5 of us getting out the house at the same time. In the morning it was just making the sandwiches and putting them in the lunchboxes with the stuff packed the night before.

  5. My DD is so stuck in a rut… she only wants to eat the same few things every day. She’s one of those kids who will eat applesauce, apple pie – pretty much anything with apples – but not an actual apple. Huh? I’ll have to try some of your suggestions… thanks! 🙂
