SodaStream makes many different models of carbonating systems {all varying in look and style}. We got the Source {designed by Yves Béhar} Starter Kit in black, along with some bottles of different flavors. As soon as it arrived  I dived into that instruction manual and set out to make pop {ya, ya. It’s called SodaStream but we say ‘pop’ here, so ‘pop’ it shall be called in this post}.

First to note, it doesn’t need to be plugged in {nor take batteries for that matter}, making the entire system completely portable. How handy to be used at the park for birthdays or brought to the next gathering?!

To Use: Simply fill the included 1-litre bottle with water to the line. I use water from our water cooler since I make it just before we drink {cold is best, right?}. Chilled tap water is great too though. Stick the top of the bottle into the nozzle, making sure it’s all the way up, then push back so the lever clicks the bottle in securely. Then, press down on the top of the machine and the water starts carbonating.

The nice thing about the Source is that the front has indicator lights, telling you 3 levels of carbonation. Stop pressing when your desired carbonation lights up {I prefer the second level best}.

After carbonation is completed, pull the bottle foreward to release and downward out of the nozzle. Done! Then, add your flavor slowly but not directly into the tonic fast or it’ll all come fizzing out at you {tip from experience, oops!}.

Really, this is such an easy process.

Convenience: Make some pop when you need it, without a trip to the store. Convenience also ties into variety, when entertaining it’s great to have choices for guests without buying so many different bottles of pop from the store.

Cost: Thanks to the seal on the bottle cap, your pop keeps its fizz longer. So, while I might snag that 2L bottle at the store, on an incredible sale, chances are it goes flat in my fridge before it’s gone. In that sense, SodaStream saves me money with less waste. Even with the purchase of the machine and syrups and replacing the CO2 cylinder after 60L of use, it’s still cheaper by liter when compared to purchasing in store.

Environmentally Friendly: With no power nor batteries to run the machine, coupled with the re-using of the bottle, it’s highly environmentally friendly. Compared to the many bottles being used otherwise? yes!

Note: the above pic is a screenshot from the site, yet it’s a counter that keeps going up and up. So, visit the site and check out the current number.

Nutritional Value: As you can see in the chart below, SodaStream is lower in calories, carbs and sodium when compared to regular pop. So, even if you opt for the regular syrups {given you don’t use too much of the syrup}, it’s better for you than the store-bought kind.

SodaStream Syrup Flavors: One of the things I love most is the choice of syrups. From fruity juices to regular and diet pop, the varieites are astounding. While I’m not a fan of the Cherry Coke from SodaStream, I do suggest any and all of the fruity varieties. My favorite so far is the Cranberry-Raspberry and the Orange-Mango.

Keep in mind that SodaStream also sells:

  • the Sparkling Natural syrups which are 100% free from artificial flavours, colourings, sweeteners, and contains no preservatives, so they are my top choice for kids.
  • My Water, adding that bit of flavoring to sparkling water
  • I can’t wait to try the Night Spirit line, Mojito, Margarita, and Cosmopolitan to name a few. How perfect is this for a cocktail to enjoy on the deck come Summer!?
  • Functional, which are sports drinks
  • Crystal Light varieties coming soon!

For the pop-aholics to the occasional indulger, SodaStream is one great small appliance to have in the home. It’s been handy to have for movie night with the kids, to full-on entertaining and special occasions.

Not just a ‘pop making machine’, you can enjoy tonic, sparkling flavored water and even Sparkling Green Tea. I’ve only scrated the surface when tasting all SodaStream has to offer, but already I’m very impressed with all the benefits there are to having one.

You can order straight from the SodaStream Canada website or just the retailer locator search page on the site to shop in store. For my city, that’s Sears and London Drugs!
