Smart Holiday Shopping – How to Maximize Rewards

Right now we are amidst the frenzy that is holiday shopping. We have the lists in hand, and now’s the time to get down to business and shop. Did you know that the secret to smart holiday shopping lies in where and how you make those purchases?

I truly admire those that have the organizational skills, patience and know-how to use coupons like a boss – yet I’m not that focused when it comes to couponing enough to make it a regular habit. Instead, my holiday shopping is knowing what I need and then maximizing rewards with my purchases.

I am a huge believer in gathering rewards since it’s the easiest way to shop, save and earn. While all have tons of rewards cards in our wallets, there are a select few that I use regularly which have proven to be money savers throughout the year. The top earner in rewards is through my RBC Rewards credit card.

I am one that uses my RBC Rewards credit card all the time on regular purchases such as gas and groceries, with the one smart rule that I pay the balance off every month. You have to approach the method in a smart manner of course, and relate a credit card to cash in the pocket – meaning I don’t put anything on there that I cannot afford.

While unexpected charges do come up {like home renovations etc}, as a general rule I use my RBC Rewards credit card on a regular basis since not all cards and even cash – don’t reward you back. This is especially true during the holidays when we do a lot more spending. This is where the importance of knowing HOW to holiday shop comes into play, since it’s also a time of year to really maximize the rewards you earn.

How to Maximize Rewards – Tips from RBC:

Look for perks that you already have access to

-In today’s competitive credit card market, your card provider might be offering extra incentives to thank you for your business and make holiday shopping easier this year. Do research into any opportunities that the cards in your wallet may present and take advantage of them.

Choose payment options wisely

-It’s not just about what you buy, it’s about how you pay. Today, we have many payment options from cash to mobile to ‘tap to pay’ to e-Transfers, so understanding which payment option is best for you and your specific purchase will make the difference in convenience.

For example, organizing a group teacher gift? Try a free e-Transfer. In a rush? Use mobile or tap to pay. Shopping at a preferred RBC Rewards partner like Saks or Apple? Make sure you use your rewards credit card to accelerate your earning potential.

Track your spending and your points

– One strong advantage to electronic banking is that you can have real time access to purchase records. Use your mobile banking app to keep tabs on your spending. And, the new RBC Rewards app lets you also keep track of your rewards activity, including a tally of your pending points and suggestions for your next redemption.

As you can see there is some great opportunities to really earn those bonus rewards this holiday season. There are many brands which RBC Rewards has partnered with for the 2016 holiday season, to give their clients even better value in their rewards collecting.

Yet remember, it’s not all about the shopping. You can always get 2X RBC rewards points anytime you pay for an Uber or UberEATS, and 2X points when you book a stay at any Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and pay with your RBC Rwards credit card.

Fact is, not all Christmas shopping is created equal. It’s all in HOW you do your holiday shopping, these tips are essential to being a savvy shopper. Maximize your RBC Rewards this 2016 holiday season whether shopping online, in-store or anytime during your travels – doing so really saves {and earns} big time, and puts some joy back into the holiday frenzy.

Yet Earning more rewards pays off through the year – earn more rewards for that must-have item, other gifting or that dream vacation! Every bit helps, especially when there are great offers that make collecting faster.
