Halloween Haul at Value Village

Halloween is one of my favourite holidays of the year. It’s a time when you can be totally silly! With the costumes, decor, and running door-to-door in the night, it’s an event that is so unlike the ordinary day-to-day. We all need a break from the usual, and this evening is the perfect time to do just that.

Given this, I love to decorate our home and attend parties for Halloween. We spend the months before hashing out details on how we’re spending the big night. At the same time, I don’t like spending top dollar on my Halloween necessities, and I try to be thrifty where I can.

I’m not alone. A recent survey from Value Village found:

  • 50% of Canadians will attend Halloween parties this year
  • 45% of Canadians will wear costumes for Halloween this year
  • 57% of Canadians agree that it’s not necessary to spend a fortune on Halloween gear
  • 50% of Canadians feel that secondhand or thrift stores are great for sourcing costumes
  • 77% of Canadians usually don’t buy new packaged costumes, and instead draw inspiration from entertainment and pop culture to put together their own.

Being the frugal Halloween lover than I am, I recently went to Value Village to check out their Halloween offerings for the first time, and I was blown away at the selection. Quite honestly I was expecting a row or two designated for Halloween items, yet was impressed that their Halloween section was pretty much half the store.

Value Village stocks both new and used items for Halloween, and it was the used section that I browsed first. I found a rack with Halloween grab bags containing assorted items with shared themes. It was here that I got a Halloween crafts grab bag for the kids filled with stamps and tattoos for just $1.99! I usually find items like these at a dollar store – which I consider be a pretty frugal-friendly destination – but Value Village has them beat on pricing!

Next I found some great outdoor decorations that I couldn’t resist. Some of our older decorations were weathered and needed replacing, and this was the perfect time to do so. The price was right and they were high-quality items as well. I love the look I created for less thanks to my Halloween Haul at Value Village.

This year I wanted to decorate a half-table in our dining room, yet I wasn’t sure what would look best in the space. In one frugal grab bag, I found some spooky 3D moving portraits in vintage-inspired frames, faux roses and sparkly spiders, and knew they’d all go well together.

I purchased a gorgeous sparkly candelabra and matching skull, as well as an iron candle holder that I thought would make a great vase for the flowers. I love the look of all these items together and the hidden spiders in the flowers!

While browsing Value Village, I recalled that I used up a lot of our entertaining items last year, so I went back to the grab bag rack to take another look. I spotted one bag containing a huge number of small and large napkins as well as cups, again all for just $1.99! On another shelf I found a cute Halloween serving tray that knew would also come in handy. I checked off my Halloween entertaining must-buys all for the price of a coffee!

During my Halloween Haul at Value Village, I had only planned on getting some outdoor items for the front of our house. I ended up adding a number of indoor decoration items and entertainment supplies as well, all for what I expected to pay for the outdoor stuff alone. Plus I got a couple of other odds and ends as well.

In addition to Value Village’s in-store selection, they offer a wide variety of creative costume ideas, makeup tutorial videos and DIY inspiration for Halloween home décor – all found on the Value Village Website as well as on their social channels {Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram}.
