Releasing Baby Turtles into the Ocean
One of the greatest heart-swelling moments of my life, and one of my favourite experiences during my stay at the Barceló Los Cabos Palace was witnessing the release of baby sea turtles into the ocean.
Over 200 baby turtles are released periodically from August until October, all together in a row, taking hours to make their way to the water. Their journey to the water seems short to us, yet this long journey {to them} makes them stronger for what’s in store once they reach the waters.
Unfortunately birds and other predation by crabs and fish are a stronger force and I was told that only 1 or 2 of those 200 released will survive to adulthood.
As sad as that was to learn, it was still such an amazing thing to witness. The beach is home to migrating Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles, and were released at sunset as they have a better chance to get away from predators at night.
I had never held a baby turtle before {I named mine Nemo}, I couldn’t believe how adorable they are! Though they are small babies, they are incredibly strong though, signs of little fighters! Having the chance to release one into the sea and cheer them all on as they made their way – was a moment I’ll never forget.
Go turtles Go! … I’m sure my little Nemo made it!
From December until approx. March, you can see groups of whales play and roam the waters in front of the Barceló Los Cabos Palace in Los Cabos, in the Sea of Cortez. Though my visit was too early in the year to see the whales, others who have gone at that time talk highly about ‘seeing all the whales’.
I know many locations {as well as the Barceló Los Cabos} offer whale-watching boat tours. Yet during prime season, this resort comes with seeing these mammals swim and blow geysers right from your pool chair or room balcony. I would love to witness that one day as well!

There are a few asociations that let you release turtles (Some hotels doesn’t have turtles at their beach), they explain you everything and sometimes they are looking for volunteers to help them to build nests and to clean them.

we got to release turtles during our stay in Cancun. They were the cutest thing! We got to watch them “play” in their tank during the day. Then in the evening, a whole bunch of us trekked onto the beach and helped those little guys find the ocean. definitely a once-in-a-life-time experience.
This is something I would LOVE to do too! I just love animals and to be able to release “Nemo” into the ocean must have been something you will never forget. I enjoyed reading this article. Thanks!
What an incredible experience! Sea turtles are such curious, gentle creatures, even when fully grown. I’ve spent some time snorkeling, and often a turtle cruised right up within arm’s reach to check out the scene. 🙂 xxx, j

I volunteered in Indonesia on a sea turtle research project. Lived in a tent, on the beach, for an entire month. Can’t say I would trade that experience for the world 🙂
