Netflix Canada

When Netflix announced their expansion into Canada, I along with many, were so excited {in fact, I jumped onto Twitter and joined int he celebration that day}. Finally we Canadians had choices in viewing movies and programming! The buzz on the web was huge this past Fall, as Canadians flocked to try out this new service. At the time, I didn’t immediately sign up and test it out, as I had no idea how to get the service in my home and was waiting to hear opinions from others first. Then one day while procrastinating on doing what I was supposed to be doing, I started browsing the Netflix Canada website and then stumbled a how-to article on how to set up Netflix Canada through the Nintendo Wii. Next thing I know {literally, within minutes}, I had connected my Wii to my wireless internet, signed up for the free month trial and was browsing through titles! I could believe how easy it was – and now I question why I didn’t do it sooner!

In the US, there is a choice of streaming Netflix via the web, or ‘renting’ discs {DVD’s} delivered to your home. In Canada, we only have the streaming option, and once streaming was introduced to Canada, the US got a taste of it too. It should be noted that those in the US may as well get used to the streaming of Netflix as the disc option will soon be obsolete.

Now, US residents do have a lot more titles available to them compared to us in Canada. Netflix is working on getting more and more permissions from studios to stream titles in Canada. So, while I find the selection right now to be ample, some may see it as not quite enough to fully commit to the service. Yet, there are titles constantly being added to Netflix Canada, and with any new service, it has to start somewhere.

The selection as I see it?
We may be newbies to the service – but we honestly haven’t watched much of our satellite programming since we got Netflix. My daughter just loves choosing her own movies and shows – there are some of her favorites and titles which she hasn’t seen yet. As well, it’s nice when the Twins scream that they want to watch some Barney – to just select a episode for them to watch. Besides tuning in to our favorite Christmas specials on TV in the evenings, we have browsed the Netflix selection before checking out the ‘ol TV guide. For myself, I haven’t seen a lot of the movies that have came out in the last 6 years, since having the kids. And, since having the twins, popping into my local video store is not an enjoyable time. So, Netflix Canada has been wonderful for me – to catch up on the last 6 years {and before}, whenever I have some spare time – even when it’s spontaneous time. I never have a hard time choosing something to watch! I can see us keeping this service, it’s under $8 per month and in our eyes – well worth it!

You can stream Netflix through the Wii, PS3 or XBox {full instructions for each are on the website}. As well, I can also watch it on my PC with my membership. For those without these devices, there is the option of getting the Apple TV receiver box as well.

Anyone can sign up for a free 1 month trial of Netflix– so I urge you to do so and test it out for yourself. After all, it’s a free trial and you need some fresh programming to watch! {who doesn’t like to catch new programs and movies?! Plus, it’s nice to have some new shows for the kids to watch while on Christmas break!}. I have a feeling this will change the way Canadians catch up on flicks and shows!

  29. I went ahead and signed up for a free trial. I love how I can use it with my Wii, my iPod, my iPhone and now my new iPad. I also love that if i started watching it on one device, I can still resume from the spot I stopped watching when I reconnect on another device.

  30. I learned that watching netflix for 1 hour uses 1 GB of bandwidth or 2GB on HD. So I need to see how much of my bandwidth I already use to see if I would have to pay more on my internet first.
