Well Hello Induction Cooking!

Recently my kitchen welcomed a new appliance, the newly released Frigidaire Gallery Free-Standing Induction Range.

I have to admit, at first it was daunting. Before then, I had only had ‘basic’ stoves. Nothing fancy at all. This ‘new tech’ item was certainly one which I was SO not used to. Plus I had the fear that our meals would take the heat {pun intended}, until I got used to this new stove.

This range some pretty remarkable features, ones which I didn’t even know existed until I took my first test drive. All new to me and utterly amazing. I really was about to be blown away.

The biggest difference was induction cooking. HELLO INDUCTION!

The first and probably the only thing I knew about this type of range was that I needed specific pots and pans. You have to have induction ready cookware for an induction range, so mama got some new cookware which was totally fun to shop for {rule of thumb, if a magnet sticks to the bottom, it’s induction ready}.

The reason why you can ONLY use induction ready pots and pans on an induction range, is the ferromagnetic material on the bottom. The connection of this ‘metal’ basically makes it work. If you put non-induction cookware on the range, it won’t even turn on. Here’s more information on What is Induction?

So, How does Induction change the way I cook?

SPEED. Whoa, watching water boil is a breeze when cooking with induction. I can boil a huge pot of water in under 5 minutes. Rather than heating the entire cooking surface, it transfers the heat directly to the pan surface only, to exactly where you need it and no where else.

INSTANT. Turn the heat down, and instantly you see the boiling tame. Same with turning the heat up – it doesn’t take it’s time and eventually get to a desired heat. The temperature change is instantaneous. Before I’d play the ‘heat game’ knowing my temp was too high, only to turn it down too low and then have to adjust. Snore. Now I can get the correct heat for cooking, without all this back and forth.

SAFE. Because the range recognizes the induction ready cookware, if this metal isn’t touching the surface, the range simply doesn’t work. So, I feel safe knowing that if the burner is left on with nothing on the range – no one will get burnt since it will not get hot. Likewise, when you remove pans from the range, it takes only seconds for the range to cool completely. No more hot stoves for long periods of time after use means I can walk away from the kitchen without worry that the entire surface is a hot hazard.

All of this really saves time in the kitchen, and eases the stress of having 3 kids running around while I cook. Amazing right?

I almost didn’t believe it myself. Have a look at my demonstration, I think the part about the paper towel is fascinating {yet PLEASE don’t try that at home!}.

Turns out it I was nervous in the kitchen for nothing and there was no break-in time when it comes to induction ranges. It’s a fascinating technology that I don’t think i could live without now.

The remarkable technology of induction in the Frigidaire Gallery Free-Standing Induction Range completely won me over!

Frigidaire Canada on Facebook is having a hot contest that you NEED to enter. It’s the Seduction of Induction Sweepstakes {I’m totally loving the name of this contest!}, the prize is the same range that I have! You have until October 31, 2013 to enter. Go!!

  17. Induction is great for kids- safer to use. A lot of pots etc can be used with induction such as cast iron. We’re happy with ours 🙂

  18. We have an induction cooktop, and I’m still trying to figure it out. After reading your post about how fast a pot can reach the boiling pot, I made note to watch the time when I boiled water…and it’s true about 4-5 minutes. That’s almost half the time to what our last stove was doing.

  19. Thinks for the review. Now I now what induction is and that you have to use special pans with it.

  25. I am so envious I have wanted one for a while now and you just made the need worse lol thanks for the post and grats on yours

  26. I am so glad you reviewed this type of range. I have seen them on sale but did not know if I should consider an induction range or not. Your review has helped a lot. I will add this type to my list when I go shopping for a range.

  27. The stove sounds really cool! I love new gizmo’s and this is the first time I’ve heard of induction cooking.

  28. I had no idea you need special induction cookware for these stoves. I like the tip about the magnets sticking to the bottom of the cookware.

  29. It is a very pretty range. I have never heard of induction cooking. If I were ever in the market for a new stove, I would consider it. However, I do not like that all pots and pans would have to be replaced. I feel like I have only just accumulated every thing I ever needed or wanted!
