How We Spent Rediscover Nature Day

With Winter looming just around the corner, we’ve been spending as much time outside as our schedule allows. Back to school and routine means there’s less time for outdoor play and discovery, yet having this time together is so important – so we take every opportunity we can get.

It needn’t be a huge planned event, just a walk or mini exploration will suffice. I have to admit, now that we have a dog in our family, we do get outside more often, even on not-so-nice days. He just loves going for a walk, and we can’t say no to his cute face.

Through the summer months we loved going to our creek property camp, and now that the season is over, I miss being surrounded by nature. I’m thankful that our city has ample trails and parks, which make you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. So this is our go-to when we feel we need to get away from daily chaos.

Sunday September 20th was Rediscover Nature Day, a date chosen to challenge families to get outdoors and spent time together in nature, even if just for an hour. We participated in this event, by setting aside some time to walk the paths in our city for a couple of hours.

During this time we parked our car and with Charlie in tow, walked the paths lined with green pine trees and poplars. Fall is such a gorgeous time of year to appreciate nature, the leaves changing colour are beautiful.

The morning was cloudy, yet the sun came out just as we arrived – it was perfect. There was a chill in the air, yet it was nothing a light sweater couldn’t handle. As we walked we explored off the beaten path, the girls collecting wild flowers and rocks. We even paused on a bridge to listen to the sounds of water, competing with the falling of crisp leaves all around us.

Breaking from the usual routine and schedules was highly needed, a nice break in the day to relax and connect. The girls ran and played, I took a few photos and appreciated the gifts before me – both in my children and the beauty surrounding me. Sometimes we take the important things in our lives for granted, and rediscovering those simple essentials are needed.

This video from Nature Valley reminds us of the fundamentals of childhood and how important it is to rediscover nature, so we don’t lose ourselves in the modern and changing world.

Even though Rediscover Nature Day is behind us now, the message continues. Let’s do our part and ensure simplicity of play and life stays strong from this day forward.

As well, don’t forget to enter the Take Me Outside contest and enter to win a trip to Banff National Park, where nature is truly at its best.

What are your favourite outdoor activities this time of year?

I am compensated for my part in the #RediscoverNature campaign from Nature Valley. Opinions, as always, are 100% my own.

  1. We love going for family walks, especially at this time of year when it’s not too hot or too cold (yet) Looks like you had a wonderful afternoon out with your family on the 20th!

  2. We took the dog for a walk along a lovely trail…. in the pouring rain! lol it was still fun 🙂

  3. Omgosh Tammi your girls turned into beautiful young ladies, dressed so nice and look so happy! I have watched them grow through pictures on your blog and can’t believe how fast time goes! You look like you had fun getting out to rediscover nature. Myself I try to do that a few times a week because it’s something I love and jump at any chance to go to Banff and Jasper, I prefer that than go to Mexico or anywhere, well unless it’s Hawaii, I am so relaxed in our mountain parks, I know most don’t understand and would rather go to Mexico, guess I am wierd.
