Fright Night with Kindle

In discussions with a friend this summer, I discovered that she read more during the summer months, mainly due to more non-scheduled time during the break from school. Myself, I definitely read more during the cold winter months – particularly because my spirit is drawn to my fireplace, a warm blanket, hot beverage and good reads. Let’s call it one of the perks of the season, and one that I’ve been enjoying more and more since flurries first made an appearance.

As patterns would also have it, right now is the ‘season of scary’ and aligning with the spirit of Halloween and all the great spooky shows and movies out right now – the reads are just as thrilling. I guess you can say, when I take a go at something, I’m all in. Case and point? IT! I watched the new thriller in theatres {ok, twice}, which made me a tad nostalgic, so I watched the originals. Now, I’m currently reading the book.

No, I didn’t snag an original paper copy of Stephen King’s It – I’m reading it on the Kindle Paperwhite! It has a 6″ High-Resolution Display with a Built-in Wi-Fi and an incredible and adjustable light, so I can read day or night.

There’s no screen glare or strain at all with this e-reader, even in sunlight. It’s actually just like looking at paper … Kindle Paperwhite. Ahh, I see what they did there.

Slim and compact, this reader can go anywhere. In fact, I was taking full advantage of the down-time and opportunity to read while waiting in my vehicle at the school for the bell to dismiss. I just got to a good Pennywise part in the story when another Mom knocked on my vehicle window, and scared the bejesus out of me. Well played.

You know I’m all about saving time and money, and this e-reader helps in those departments too. No extra trips to the store or extra funds allocated, there’s over a million titles available to download on Amazon – I’ve seen countless for $4.99 CAD or less. And no, my reading of scary thrillers won’t end with Halloween behind me, I think perhaps it’s less traumatic than the dirty kid-sized sock I found under the bathroom sink. Now that’s questionable.

In the spooky-reads and all, and with the evenings are darker and quicker – here are a few recommended titles to curl up with. Lights on or off, of course.

Yet I’ll also recommend anything by Dean Koontz and Dan Brown – those are always favourites of mine.
