With the transition from summer to fall {and then ‘w’ but I just cannot bear to say that word yet}, so comes the need for more starchy comfort foods. Since I limit ‘white foods’ the best I can, so I reach for sweet potatoes a lot more than I used to.

This has been an acquired taste for me since we didn’t eat sweet potatoes growing up, it wasn’t until the late teens when I first had mashed sweet potatoes which were served as a side to Thanksgiving dinner.

Spicy Maple Sweet Potato Wedges is one perfect side dish to any meal, it’s beyond delicious. It’s that nice compromise when I really want some starchy fries, but know I should opt for a healthier alternative.

Since I’m relatively *new* to eating sweet potatoes, I find that I really need to jazz them up in order to really enjoy them, so what better a combination than both sweet and spicy! Thanks to maple syrup and some pepper flakes, it’s the best of both worlds.

Fall comes plenty of frugally priced sweet potatoes at the grocer and markets. So this is one recipe that will keep the budget happy this fall, but also fill that need for some warm comforting foods as we say farewell to summer days.

Bring on the oversized sweaters, hot beverages and boots – this is just one small {maple} pleasure that we can hang onto when the Autumn air blows.

Enjoy!

Spicy Maple Sweet Potato Wedges is a great combination of both sweet and spicy, a perfect side to any Autumn or Winter meal!

Ingredients

  • 2 large Sweet potatoes, washed {peeled is optional}
  • ¼ cup Maple Syrup
  • ¼ cup Butter, melted
  • ½ tsp Chili flakes, dried {less or more depending on your preference}
  • ¼ tsp Cinnamon powder
  • ¼ tsp Ginger powder
  • dash Salt and Pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Combine all ingredients except for the potatoes in a large bowl. Whisk together until completely mixed.
  3. Add the wedges of potatoes, and with clean hands, mix them around to bring the coating from the bottom to the top to ensure all pieces of potato get covered with the sweet/spicy mixture.
  4. On a parchment lined baking sheet, lay out the wedges so they don’t overlap.
  5. Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes. Check them at the 15 minute mark to flip them. Check again at the 25 minute mark to ensure they’re not burning because of the sugar, or if they maybe need more time cooking {Cooking time will depend on the size of the wedges of potato}.
  6. Upon serving, garnish with a drizzle more of maple syrup.
